Planning for Today
Emily Apuzzo Hopkins | October 19, 2020
I have heard all of the jokes about how useless a 2020 calendar turned out to be. I have also laughed at these jokes as the only things that really ended up claiming any space on those blank pages were self-imposed scribbles to help me create some form of structure in my day-to-day. Then just last week, I saw an ad for Passion Planner. It was a tweet from someone I do not know saying something I know too well… it said something to the effect of anyone who thought their 2020 calendar was a waste didn’t have a Passion Planner.
For a few years, I too was a part of the #pashfam. I loved the journal prompts and the beautifully simple way of breaking up my day. It was great. I strayed for a couple of years, but last week, I found myself reading that tweet and thinking, “Yeah, I really need to buy my planner.” I had sampled some of the daily planner free downloads to test things out and I found that I was so much more productive in my personal and professional lives and, wait for it… with my passions as well.
As I was putting into words what this meant, I realized that the daily planner helps me set intentions for my day. It helps me narrow down what I truly want to focus on in every area in my life and forces me to make S.M.A.R.T. plans. I also noticed that if my goal is always for tomorrow, it is never getting done today… and THAT has hit with me like a punch in the gut.
The consistency of an aligned mindset and goal-setting is where the true magic of passion-planning comes to be. It is not always about “the hustle”. Hustling conjures up feelings of depletion in one area as the tunnel vision prevents the periphery from coming into view. To me, planning with passion at the center acknowledges that there are other parts of my life that I must continue to factor in, but my passion always has a seat at the table. I will always make time for it.
So, here I wait for my new planner to arrive and since it can truly start at any time, I now have the challenging decision to make… do I dive into it right now? Do I wait for a new month to start or even a new year? But then I realize the answer is already there right in front of me: If the goal is always tomorrow, it is never getting done today.
